This repo r t was created fo r global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting wo r ld markets. With the advent of a ",bo r derless wo r ld",, cities become a mo r e impo r tant criteria in prio r itizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, o r countries. This repo r t covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by repo r ting the estimated market size (in terms of latent dema nd) fo r each majo r city of the wo r ld. It then ranks these cities a nd repo r ts them in terms of their size as a percent of the country wh ere they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, No r th America, Latin America), a nd the total wo r ld market. In perfo r ming various economic analyses fo r its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential fo r various products a nd services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understa nd the density of dema nd within a country a nd the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. fr om an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist o r strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies fr om one industry to another, but also fr om one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential fo r the wo r ld's majo r cities fo r ",alternating current transfo r mer arc welding machines excluding stud welding equipment", fo r the year 2016. The goal of this repo r t is to repo r t my findings on the real economic potential, o r what an economist calls the latent dema nd, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent dema nd may o r may not represent real sales. Fo r many items, latent dema nd is clearly observable in sales, as in the case
